Urban gardening\u00a0makes use of rooftops, balconies, alleyways, sidewalks or whatever little space the gardener has available.<\/p>

If you are new to growing vegetables in containers, here are a few tips to help you succeed.<\/p>

  1. Container Selection<\/li><\/ol>

    Select as large a container as possible. Small containers dry out more quickly and need daily watering.\u00a0Self-watering planters designed for urban balconies and patios\u00a0extend the time between watering. Even fabric pots are good for growing vegetables with the colorful\u00a0Grow Bag\u00a0line; you can add some whimsy to your vegetable garden. Remember that the deeper the pot, the larger the reservoir of moist soil and the less often you\u2019ll need to water. The exception is a\u00a0Self-Watering Planter. In this case, the depth of the planting area can be kept to a minimum because moisture is provided by a water reservoir below the planting area.<\/p>

    2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Soil<\/h3>

    Do not fill your containers with soil from your garden or bagged topsoil. You should fill the containers with a \u201csoilless\u201d blend that will retain moisture and resist compaction, such as\u00a0Container Mix. Usually, mix in a liberal amount of\u00a0granular organic fertilizer\u00a0and a shovel-full or so of compost.<\/p>

    3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Water<\/h3>

    Vegetables require a consistent supply of water to perform their best. Inconsistent moisture causes lots of problems, such as blossom drop, poor root development, leaf curling, insect problems, and rot. The best way to ensure your plants always have a consistent supply of water is to use a\u00a0self-watering planter. Filling the reservoir every few days is all that\u2019s required. The plants absorb moisture as they need it.<\/p>

    4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Fertilizer<\/h3>

    Fertilizer is especially important when you\u2019re growing vegetables in containers. In fact, you just won\u2019t succeed if you don\u2019t use some kind of fertilizer. I recommend mixing a granular organic\u00a0All-Purpose Fertilizer\u00a0into the soil when planting, then weekly feeding with a water-soluble fertilizer, such as\u00a0Plant Health Care.<\/p>

    If aphids, mites, or whiteflies attack, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Handpick and destroy tomato hornworms.<\/p>

    Pick crops when they\u2019re ripe:\u00a0beans<\/em>\u00a0before the seeds swell inside the pods;\u00a0cucumbers and squash<\/em>\u00a0when fruits are fully expanded but not seedy;\u00a0peppers<\/em>\u00a0when fully grown and showing appropriate color (green, red, or another shade);\u00a0tomatoes<\/em>\u00a0when fully colored (red, orange, or yellow).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
